TEACH Ambassadors attend leadership seminar

by TEACH South Africa

“It is no longer enough to have a qualification; graduates need to be developed further to meet the demands of the workplace.”

These were the words of Ursula Fear from Deloitte at the recent leadership development workshop and networking session held at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, giving 2009 TEACH Ambassadors guidance on what to expect on leaving the programme and entering the work environment.

TEACH South Africa recruits and trains top university graduates to teach Maths, Science, Technology and English in disadvantaged schools in urban and rural areas for a period of two years.

After the two years,TEACH Ambassadors can then pursue teaching or any other career they’re interested in.

The seminar was attended by TEACH Ambassadors, heads of department, officials from the Department of Education, mentors and mentees.

The aim of the workshop was to facilitate and equip TEACH Ambassadors with the additional skills and tools they need to continue being effective wherever they are.

TEACH South Africa staff member, Lerato Mathenjwa, commented, “Education is a lifelong process and it is important that we use these workshops and similar interventions to feed information to the Ambassadors and continually define and reinforce their roles.”

The seminar wasn’t limited to just lectures and presentations.

TEACH Ambassadors also had an opportunity to meet and mingle with the mentors and a few invited guests.

2009 TEACH Ambassador Meurial Mushunje thanked TEACH South Africa for the fantastic workshop, a sentiment echoed by all in attendance.
