Muriel Magaya, a 2009 TEACH Ambassador, holds a Masters degree in Mathematics and Science.

After teaching Physical Science to Grade 11s for a year at Erasmus Monareng High School in Johannesburg’s East Rand, Muriel has been asked to teach the same subject to Grade 12s.

“Being entrusted with the task of teaching Grade 12s is overwhelming and somewhat nerve-wracking, but I am determined to do everything in my power to make sure that my students do well in their matric examinations,” Muriel says.

Muriel believes her being asked to teach the Grade 12s was as a result of the good marks her Grade 11 class produced.

“Teachers at my school complimented me a lot on my class. They would sometimes sit in on my classes and observe me while I taught, so I think they saw the good work that I am doing.

“I have developed lifelong relationships with my learners thanks to TEACH South Africa; we interact better and they treat me like their role model,” says Muriel.

She adds that what she loves most about teaching is the ability to impart knowledge to young, fresh minds.

“I love building learners to be leaders. What humbles me most is the trust that parents put in you to build their children’s futures.”

Asked what her recipe for success is, Muriel says she enjoys the subjects that she teaches and this motivates her learners.

“I love Physical Science; it is an interesting subject. I never go to class sad. Even if I am, I smile and laugh a lot with my learners and this creates a good learning atmosphere.”

One of Muriel’s most memorable lessons was when her class did a practical investigation in chemical change.

“My learners were so excited to see the change that happens when you mix magnesium or burn metal, I was really happy to have been there to experience that day with them.”

Muriel says every lesson requires creativity and this has taught her to be more innovative in using the resources at her disposal.

On a personal level, Muriel’s motto is: “If you can imagine it then you can be it.”

“I tell my students that they all have the potential to succeed; they just need to tap into it,” she adds.

Muriel says she is grateful to TEACH South Africa for giving her the opportunity to touch the lives of those less fortunate than her.

“Even though I am in a foreign land, I have found relatives. Thank you TEACH South Africa.”
