NWU honours TEACH South Africa with 2009 Employer of Choice Award
by TEACH South AfricaNorth-West University recently presented TEACH South Africa with the 2009 Employer of Choice Award in recognition of the partnership between the two organisations.
According to Bernice Smit, manager of the career centre at North-West University, TEACH South Africa is one of a number of organisations that belong to the university’s Employer of Choice group.
“Group members have first choice to attend graduate placement opportunities,” says Smit. “We have several of these types of opportunities throughout the year and this has helped TEACH South Africa build a strong brand on the three campuses [Potchefstroom, Vaal and Mafikeng].
“In addition, we have a programme where TEACH South Africa identifies what it is looking for in recruits. We then approach the heads of the relevant faculties and ask them to identify their top students.”
Belonging to the group has paid dividends, according to TEACH South Africa Operations Manager Vuyiswa Ncontsa.
“Of the 25 graduates we accepted last year, two came from North-West University,” says Ncontsa.
“We were invited to come to the career days and expos, and we put a lot of effort into accessing graduates from all three of their campuses.
“The award has positioned the TEACH South Africa brand as an unusual and audacious option for high-achieving graduates who have a burning desire to give back to society. The symbiotic relationship between TEACH, NWU and its graduates is underpinned by the shared values of hard work, respect and the belief that one’s attitude will determine the altitude one reaches.”
