Ekurhuleni schools take part in Maths Table Challenge
by TEACH South Africa12 schools in the Thokoza Cluster of Ekurhuleni South took part in a Maths Table Challenge on Monday, July 19, at Maphanzela Primary School.
The challenge involved top learners from Grades Four to Seven answering multiplication and division problems in less than 10 minutes.
One of the objectives is to “improve and develop the mental Maths ability of learners” says Themba Tshabalala, a district official monitoring the challenge.
The winners are chosen and prizes are awarded on speed and accuracy.
TEACH Ambassador at Encochoyini Primary School, Richard Marumani, who has been giving additional Maths classes to prepare his learners for both the district and provincial challenges, was pleasantly surprised by their performance, especially after a long school holiday.
Lerato Mathenjwa, who provides on-going maths support, says, “Heads of department and cluster administrators play a vital role in making sure that these challenges are a success.
“Learner training and practice will lead to better results. If the challenges and training start as early as Grade Four, the learners will improve their marks and perform better by the time they get to Grade Seven.”

Sindiswa Maphoso, the principal of Encochoyini, expressed much joy at the success and achievement of the Maths Table Challenge participants, saying that learners at the school should work even harder to achieve top marks at the district and provincial championships.
Of the 12 trophies up for grabs, Encochoyini walked away with six:
• First place in Grades Five, Six and Seven
• Second place in Grades Six and Seven
• Third place in Grade Five
Congratulations to Hombisa Galela and Sandisiwe Sigoxo (Grade Four); Olwethu Kom and Sibusiso Mboniso (Grade Five); Sinovuyo Faku (Grade Six); Abongile Siko (also Grade Six), who was the only learner to score 100%; and Simbulele Ngalonkulu and Chumeni Ralarala (Grade Seven).
TEACH South Africa would like to wish all learners good luck at the provincial championships on Saturday, September 4.
